Description

This logging tool is specifically designed to measure the flushed-zone resistivity R_xo. The tool uses a four-arm caliper (push-arm) device, measuring the flushed-zone resistivity while simultaneously measuring the borehole diameter in the X- and Y-axes.

Owing to the special electrode-array structure, the equipotential surfaces of the main current lines within the flushed zone are approximately spherical. Its investigation depth is appropriate, the mud-cake effect is small, and the measurement essentially reflects the resistivity of the flushed zone.

When the flushed-zone resistivity R_xo is greater than the mud-cake resistivity R_mc, the formation can be judged as permeable. Furthermore, R_xo, together with dual-lateral resistivity, can be used to quantitatively calculate the virgin-zone resistivity R_t and the formation-water resistivity R_w, and then to derive parameters such as permeability and gas saturation.

It is mainly used in coal-bed methane (CBM), shale gas, and related fields.
